A Brief History of Boat Building
from: Maxx Adventure TravelBoat and ship building goes way back, even before recorded history. The process of building a ship or boat usually requires many people plus a large spece in which to do the constructing.
A ship is able to carry thousands of people and as well as other cargo and are designed mainly for deep water navigation. Boat are much smaller, although they essetially do the same thing -- transport people and cargo across water. Ships and boats both have many different types of designs.
Early Ship and Boat Building
We know that ship and boat building had been around for many centuries because the evidence reveals that ships and boats have been used for transportation going all the way back to the early Egyptians. These early boat builders used treenails to tie the wood together and a substance called "pitch" for the seams.
As time passed, new designs were created for ships and boats that made them safter, more stable and durable. As well, new ways were developed to propel them faster across the water. Of course, the use of oars was how the boat or ship were first propelled through the water. The more oars the boat or ship carried, the faster it could go, but of course this required more man power to handle the oars and often slaves were used to take on this difficult task.
Gradually iron was used in the construction of ships and to increase its strength and durability and, by the end of the 19th century, wrought iron replaced in the building of these water vessels. However, wood continued to be main material used for ship and boat building.
Modern Ships and Boats
The twentieth century saw major changes and improvements in the construction of ship and boat building. New and advancing technologies have taken ship and boat buidling to new heights never dreamed of before. Not only are boats and ship sturdier and more durable, new designs, including lightweight materials, have increased speed as well as buoyancy.
A boat can be small enough to handle just one person boat or huge, such as the enormous cruise ships that carry over a thousand people through the water to their favorite vaction spots througout the world.Ship and boat designs and building have shown major advances throughout the years and will continue to do so in the future.
