Wooden Boat Building Methods

Since wood boats are so common, you'll discover there are lots of wooden boat building designs available, which makes it easy to get the exact style you have in mind.
As you go through the design plans, you'll be abel to review the pros and cons, advantages and disadvantages for each one. Wooden boats are going to need regular maintenance to keep them in tip top condition -- not nearly as difficult a task as it used to be thanks to modern technology.
Here are some common methods for building a wooden boat:
Stitch and Glue
There's a major difference in the stitch and glue method to other methods in that it's much faster as well as easier in part due to its not requiring a building mold. In addition, fewer parts are needed. The parts are sealed together with epoxy which is provides a very strong bond.
One of the main steps required in the stitch and glue method is cutting out the bottom and side panels. Next, you proceed to stitch them together at the seams with baling wire which will hold the boat together so the epoxy glue can be applied and cured. Once this task is completed the wires can be removed. Epoxy is then applied to the seam of the boat and stengthened with a layer of fiberglass tape.
Additional Wooden Boat Building Methods
Most of the other boat building methods require a mold in order to fit the design together. For instance, have a look at the wooden plank on frame design which usually requires using a complex building mold in order to shape the design. However, for smaller boats a mold isn't necessary.
Carvel and Lapstrake are well-known traditional designs. Carvel doesn't need adhesives such as epoxy glue when designing the shell but may be used in other parts which also applies to the lapstrake design.
There's no requirement that you must be a highly skilled craftsman to be successful at wooden boat building, as long as you have basic skills and can use the power tools properly. Of course, you're going to need somewhere to safely build your boat, plus the materials and enough available time to get the project completed.
Once you have the instructions that give you the specifics of the design and the order in which they need to be build, you're good to go.
