What to Look for in a Hiking Backpack

from: Maxx Adventure Travel

Hiking and camping are often considered to be in the same outdoor sports category, but the reality is, they're often quite different. When camping, on of the goals is to just get away from the hustle and bustle of society and retreat into the peaceful quiet of nature. Hiking has a similar goal regarding getting away from society, but the added purpose is to get lots of exercise while out in nature. Therefore good hiking backpacks will have a different purpose and must fulfill that purpose or you'll just end up wishing for your car.

As soon as you have your other gear sorted, examine it and decide on the size of the hiking backpack needed to best do the job for your hiking group. Size is very important since the goal of this type of adventurer is to keep moving at all times, and so you need an extremely comfortable and durable pack that won't cause any back or shoulders discomfort or injury.

A good hiking backpack should have adjustable shoulder straps and lots of padding to prevent them from digging into your shoulder when you're carrying it. In addition, an adjustable and padded hip belt is important, along with a pack that properly displaces the weight of the pack on your back evenly. This helps protect your body for wear and tear when hiking.

A lot of people agreed that internal frame hiking backpacks are the best type since they have internal aluminum frames integrated into the inside of the pack. These aluminum frames are very light weight since they're usually hollow and due to the material they're made from. Some hiking backpacks have one external bar that helps disperse weight more evenly and focus the pack's weight closer to your hips, which is your natural center of gravity.

Pockets found on the side and front of the backpack are often of the same material or made of mesh. These mesh pockets make it easier to find your gear, however, they're not waterproof. Hiking backpacks always have easy access pockets for hydration gear, and some have a built in tube where you can take in fluids.

In addition, main compartments of some packs are divided, which provides some space for both dirty and clean clothing and gear and helps organize gear so it's easier to find what you need. Side compression straps are another very important part of any hiking backpack because they compress the load so that the pack won't slide around on your back. This means less jostling when hiking and a more fun adventure.

We shouldered our backpacks, picked up our tools, headed uphill and disappeared from the world. High in the Rockies of Colorado, just west of the Continental Divide, we walked and looked and suffered and, along the way, made our separate peace with it all.
