The Great Yosemite Camping Adventurefrom: Maxx Adventure Travel
Vacationers who visit Yosemite Natrional Park often choose to enjoy the wonders of this beautiful area for only a day. So a great way to avoid all the car traffic entering the park that allows you to stay close to the natural beauty of the park is camping. If you're planning to just visit the park, no reservation is required. Howeve, if you're going to spend the night, then Yosemite camping reservations will likely be required depending on the time of year you're planning to visit and the campground you'll be staying at.
Whether you have a reservation or not, you'll have to pay an entrance fee of $20 per vehicle for cars or trucks, which allows you come and go access for up to seven days. If you arrive at the park on foot, by motorcycle, or horseback, this entrance pass is $10.00 per person. If you expect you'll be visiting the park several times throughout the year, or if you're a senior citizen or a disabled person, inquire about a special admittance pass that should save you some money.
Camping in the Yosemite area gives you 13 campgrounds from which to choose, but keep in mind there's lots of competition for these reservations for certain times of the year, so plan to make them well ahead of time. Car campgrounds in Yosemite Valley require reservations year round while Hodgdon Meadow, Crane Flat, or Wawona campgrounds, require reservations from summer through autumn. About 50% of the space at Tuolumne Meadows will require reservations from summer through fall. The balance of the campsites at Yosemite work on a first-come, first-served basis.
Making a Yosemite camping reservation can be done using the National Park Reservation System. The system is a bit odd, because although reservations can be made up to about 4 months ahead of the time you'd like to visit, and although you can reserve up to a month of days at a time, you are only able to make those reservations on a strict schedule, always starting on the 15th of a month, depending on when you would like to arrive at the site.
For example, if you want to arrive between December 15th and January 14th, the first day you can make those reservations is August 15th. September 15th is the first day to make Yosemite camping reservations for arriving from January 15th to February 14th, and so on. For the most popular months of May and September, it's not uncommon to discover that all reservations are taken within just a few hours of the first day you can make them. Be sure to check back from time to time for cancellations.
