How To Choose the Best Tent for Camping

from: Maxx Adventure Travel

An essential outdoor camping piece of equipment that can make or break your camping experience is the quality of your tent. Thus a large selection of tents are available at sporting goods outlets, department stores and even by purchasing online.

When choosing a tent, you can narrow your choices by deciding how large a tent you require. This will depend, of course, on how much gear you want to store in the tent as well as how many people will be sharing the space.

Tents are constructed to comfortably house a specific number of campers. Thus, a solo backpacker will require a tent much smaller than a family of campers who require a larger and roomier tent.

Most tents are labeled with a description and their capacity, which indicates how many individuals the tent can hold.

If you don't want to have a collection of severl tents in different sizes, it's wise to determine the largest number of individuals you'll likely need to sleep altogether in the tent.

If you backpack with a companion, but you're going solo this summer, it's a good idea to get a "two-person" tent.

There are basically four tent components -- the poles, tent body, rain fly and the tarp, which is some kind of footprint or ground cloth to extend your tent's floor life.

Here are some guidelines for choosing the best tent for you:

1. Consider your needs first. Know your specific requirements, such as where you most often go camping, and the season you normally go. Also, how many usually come along on your camping trips. This will give you a clear idea of the type of tent you'll need.

2. Set your budget. When you determine your budget before looking for a tent, you're less likely to overspend.

3. Tent weight and size. How many people will be sleeping in the tent? The size of your tent won't really matter should you go "car camping", however, if you're going backpacking, then get a "light-weight" tent.

4. Consider Tent features. Tent manufacturers now offer many features for their tents. Mesh panels allow the breeze to go through your tent while keeping mosquitoes and bugs out, "shock-corded" tent poles allow speedy setup, waterproof and flame resistant for safety, a rain fly for added rain protection, etc.

5. Make certain you select a durable fabric tent. It will cost you more money, but this is something well worth spending extra money.

6. Select the proper tent color. Inspect how the color of the tent transmits light into its interior. Certain colors generate a brighter interior, whereas others create a cave-like and dreary environment.

Light colors, are best during summer month camping since they tend to be cooler, whereas dark colors can absorb in solar energy so they're great during camping in cold weather.

7. Check the tent's coating. Remember, you must see a waterproof and shiny coating inside the floor as well as a rain fly. If this isn't visible or you can't feel this on the tent's fabric, than it isn't thick enough to withstand heavy use.

8. Understand that your tent needs in the summer is very different compared when camping in the snow.

Most tents available have weather ratings. Make sure you purchase a tent specifically made for the particular weather condition or season you'll be out camping.

9. Tent manufacturers. Various tent manufacturers have unique designs and names. Some are identified as makers of inexpensive tents, while others are recognized for making high quality, but expensive tents.

Popular tent makers include Coleman, Wenger, Eddie Bauer and Greatland Tents. Choose a tent manufacturer who's has been trusted for years.

In the forest or wilderness especially, having the wrong camping equipment won't kill you, but it will could send you packing to a motel.

For a well-planned and fun camping vacation, take your time when purchasing your tent. It's going to be your home for a few days so having the right tent will keep you comfortable and warm, especially during rainy and cold nights.
