Choosing the Right Rock Climbing Equipment

from: Maxx Adventure Travel

There are many heights that people hope to reach -- literally and figuratively, but for rock climbers, the ultimate trip is reaching the peak of a high summit that gives them a fabulous view of this wonderful sight.

This is one of the many reasons people are attracted to mountain climbing. Considering out busy our lifestyles have become in this modern world, finding yourself on a mountain peak is a great escape that can really help one feel closer to nature as well as refresh the mind and spirit. It also challenges the body to reach its maximum potential in going through the natural mountain paths to reach the highest goal.

The Sport of Rock Climbing

Mountain climbing or mountaineering is a classic sport that has been done for decades. It used to be just a hike in the mountains, but now it involves different combinations of snow, ice, mountain or rock climbing mixed in with camping and rappelling.

Regardless of what the combination may be, the ultimate goal is to reach the top. Every once of effort and will are directed to get to the peak.

Therefore, many people take on the challenge of rock climbing, taking on an adventure they enjoy both physically and mentally.

However, there are some people who still hesitate, fearing they may not have what it takes or the right skills to survive.

Mountaineering or rock climbing is something that can be learned and pursued by anyone physically able to do so. All thats needed is to give yourself enough time and effort to learn the proper skills required. An important way to eliminate fear is to make sure you're using all the necessary equipment and safety gear.

Rock Climbing Equipment

Rock climbing is certainly more than just a walk in the woods. Therefore it's necessary to bring along the right equipment that will enable you to meet any challenges that presents itself along the way.

Here are a few tips to help you equip yourself properly.

1. Rope

Choosing the best rope is important for rock climbing, since it's the one item you can't miss on your equipment list. Your rope serves as your security from falling, so make sure you have a good one.

When buying rope for rock climbing, it's best to choose one with a diameter of ten to eleven millimeters and 50 to 60 meters long.

2. Harness

Your harness is what you wear to keep you tied to the rope. It's worn around your body and is attached to the rope and will prevent you from falling when you climb on the rocks. Make sure your harness fits your body properly. It must be comfortable enough in your waist and thigh areas.

3. Chalk and Chalk Bag

Chalk is what you use to make your hands able to grip firmly on the rocks or rope. You rub chalk on your hands to minimize dampness that could cause slipping. It comes in ball form or powdered. The chalk bag should be attached to your harness so you can easily access it when the need arises. You can purchase these items at any sports shop or specialty store.

4. Climbing Shoes

When you're out rock climbing, you can't depend on the ordinary rubber shoes or boots. You'll need shoes especially made for rock climbing. They must fit you just right, snug but comfortable enough to let you move.

5. Helmet

Your helmet is one an very important item when rock climbing as it protects the head from any falling debris, especially ones that fall off because of people climbing ahead of you. It also helps avoid unnecessary bruising and bumps you might get when you bump against a wall or rock.

Conclusion

Rock climbing is both safe and fun if you are using the best equipment. It's never a good idea to buy the cheapest you can find. Quality counts because the better the equipment, the less chance of injury and the more exhilarating the experience will be for you and your fellow climbers.
