Buying a Rock Climbing Harness

from: Maxx Adventure Travel

When shopping for a quality rock climbing harness, there are a few things to look for when shopping for the right harness. You should be able to find a good variety to choose from online and at most sporting goods stores.

The first order of busines is to purcahse a rock climbing harness that fits properly. If it's too tight or too loose, it less likely to protect a person from falling. A harness is a safety device used if someone can't grab onto a rope or falls. The harness keeps them protected to the safety cord at all times. If a harness isn't fitted properly, a person could actually fall out of it which could lead to serious injury or even death if the person falls from a great height.

A rock climbing harness should have new buckles and shouldn't have any tears or stress points. Never buy a harness that appears to have been used since it could be torn somewhere and could rip if too much weight is added to it. Harnesses are most commonly made of nylon or a combination fabric. It can tear if enough pressure is put on it, so always buy a new harness, don't borrow someone else's.

Once you've got your new harness, take it to a rock climbing wall and give it a good work out, since a rock wall simulates a real rock face. It always a good idea to try out new equipment after purchasing it to ensure it operates as it should. You'll feel more comfortable and this testing out will help you notice any problems before taking it out on a real climb. If you're a first time rock climbers, you should definitely test out all your equipment. If you go with someone who's an experienced climber, they'll be able to advise you if the equipment is safe or not.

Your harness can potentially save your life, but they must be worn properly. Store your harness in a cool, dry location away from water or heat. If your harness should ever get exposed to water damage, thrown it away, and purchase a new one for safety purposes.
