Dos and Don'ts of Climbing During Winter

from: Maxx Adventure Travel

If you're planning to do some mountain climbing during winter, here's what you should know before hitting the sports shops for crampons and other ice climbing tools.

If you're not from an area that experiences winter, make sure you spend adequate time allowing your body to adjust and acclimate itself to the season. Mountain climbing during winter should only be considered if you're certain your body has adjusted properly to the intensely of the colder climate.

Also, be sure to spend sufficient time acquainting yourself for traveling in snow. Learn about basic emergency tips as well as how to deal with common accidents, injuries and illnesses caused by winter.

Ice climbing is probably the most difficult of all types of mountain climbing so, if you're just a beginner, you definitely should polish your skills before to ensure a safe first attempt. Ice climbing, although exciting, is a dangerous sport that must be respected.

Consult with a professional and have him evaluate your skills. If he doesn't think you're up to the rigors of mountain climbing during winter, don't push your luck and proceed. Read more, practice more, and get youself into tip top physical condition and you'll soon be ready. Be patient!

When choosing clothing to wear or bring for mountain climbing during winter, always consider practicality over fashion. Although the latest trends in winter clothing may seem irresistible, looking good won't get you anywhere if they can't provide you with adequate protection as you start climbing icy slopes.

There will be times your hands will feel too numb or frozen to be as nimble as they actually are, which makes tying knots more difficult. Thus it's important for you to learn how to tie your rope quickly and efficiently so you can continue doing them successfully, even if you're slightly handicapped because of the weather.

Shoes you usually wear for mountain climbing are probably ineffective if you're planning to climb during the winter. Make sure you buy a pair that will allow you to tread safely on snowy and slippery slopes.

Finally, always avoid climbing alone. Whether you're mountain climbing during summer or winter, you should have a companion with you, since two brains always work better than one.
