Choose Sea Equipment for Kayaking

from: Maxx Adventure Travel

Once you've mastered all the strokes, rolls and other skills required for kayaking, the next thing on the agenda is getting to know about all the equipment needed before heading out for a coastal cruise. Along with choosing the your equipment you'll need to start with the right kayak. A good choice recommend by experts is the Eskimo kayaks for sea cruising. Nanuk Kayaks are Eskimos replicas, and one that's proven to be a popular choice along with the US K-1.

For long coastal cruises it's a good idea to get a kayak that allows the installation of sails. Folding kayaks are good for this purpose. Keppler is a folding kayak worth your consideration, especially when you know that a man crossed the ocean in a folding Keppler, successfully reaching his destination. Another folding kayak to consider is the Folbot.

Choosing what to take on your trip

If you've prepared a checklist, your list should include flares, bail, a repair kit, stray cover, lifejacket, stowage plans, buoyancy, navigational chart(s), spare paddles, sail rig, compass, clothes, layout of deck, rudder, etc. And don't forget to have a weather forecast handy as well.

Preparations before venturing on a sea cruise

Before heading out on your sea cruise, make sure you've practiced rescue techniques, using your chart(s) to make notes of sea areas that could pose some risks. Also practice recovery or rescue steps prior to as well as on the same day you've planned your cruise.

Selecting equipment

Make it a point to bring a bailer with you, which is a container that removes water from your kayak in case you capsize.

Buoyancy gives you resilience during a capsize. If your boat flips, these bags prevent your boat from trapping too much water. Learn the proper structure of buoyancy because overloading could make it difficult to re-boarding your boat if it capsizes.

Protect your chart(s) from water damage

In addition to chart(s), bring a waterproof protective cover. The charts are critically important and could save your life so make sure they're properly marked properly and refer to them regularly during your journey.

Choosing proper kayak clothing

When travelling on any type of water, keeping warm will often become an issue, so a wetsuit is a good idea along with a waterproof hooded parka.

Single or double kayak

Even when you're traveling alone you can still use a double kayak. However, why not plan a kayak trip that includes others, since traveling the sea alone isn't always a good ideal, unless you're really an extreme expert.

Emergency gear

Your checklist should include flares, deck layout, repair kit, camping gear, lifejacket, spare paddles, etc. Certainly all of these are essential, but you may want to focus specifically on deck layouts. During your trip you're going to burn up a lot of energy so you're going to be thristy a lot, so bring lots of water.
