Kayaking Choices
from: Maxx Adventure TravelA Kayak is a canoe used for leisure, recreation, and sports as well as racing, and cruising. There are currently about sixty companies that manufacturer kayaks, so there's plenty of different models to choose from once you've decided to take up kayaking.
Kayaking is a choice for people who love the outdoors and adventure, but it takes specific skills and balance to maneuver a kayak. When getting into kayaking you can choose between smaller kayaks, which are easier to maneuver or longer kayaks, which are perfect for water adventures.
In addition to length, another consideration is the shape of the kayak. A kayak with a wide and flat bottom is relatively easy to maneuver because the platform is stable. Round bottom kayaks are usually as well as less stabe, but easier and faster for paddling, especially if you're sitting in the middle of the kayak.
Longer kayaks are also fast, and if it doesn't have kneels, your moving ability is enhanced. Kayaks with kneels often won't ground in shallow waters. Shoe kneels or flat kayaks provide more protection than fin kneel kayaks.
Kayaks can be maneuvered with double bladed paddles that propels the boat. Stumpy end kayaks tend to ride well with the waves. These kayaks will slip through less water than the sharp end kayaks. Freeboard kayaks, with higher ends, often cause a passenger to propel harder through the waters which is especially the case if the wind is blowing harder than normal.
When getting started, low-profiled kayaks are a good choice. Kayaks with underwater shapes, as well as rockers are ideal, especially if the center of the boat is deeper and a rise is at the stern and bow, since they move with less effort. Most experts choose the "paddling thwarts" since more support is available.
Choosing Your Kayaks Material
So which kayak material should you choose? First, how much the boat weights is dependant on the material is made from. Glass reinforced plastics (GRP), aluminum, or fiberglass are all lightweight materials, but also made to last. Most 17 footers weigh about 80 pounds, while lighter weight kayaks come in at about 60 pounds.
Kayaks made from wood usually have framed canvases and are often heavier, although there are lighter weight kayaks made of wood. One disadvantage is they often absorb water, which adds to the weight. However, the advantages of a wooden kayaks is they are now made of longitudinal strips, which produce strong and solid boats.
Many kayaks are now made of fiberglass which is sturdier material that absorbs less water. However, there were issues with fibergalss, which brought on the GRP canoes and kayaks, which is no a popular brand since this material is cheaper than many other types of materials.
