Planning Your Kayaking Trip

from: Maxx Adventure Travel

There are many Kayaking adventures you can choose from including whitewater adventures, black water rides, competitions, coastal and inland cruises, river travel etc. So how do you determine which of your many options is best for your skill level and enjoyment. Start by asking youself a few questions.

What level of kayaking skills do you have? Will your skill level and experience allow you to handle dangerous adventures or competitions?

This is a good starting point. If you fail to ask the right questions so you properly plan, learn and practice before heading out into still or moving waters, you're just asking for trouble.

Expert kayakers know that it's important for anyone, regardless of their skill level, to practice before going into the waters. So ask yourself how much knowledge, and ability and practice do you have doing basic and advanced strokes? Are you familiar with all the strokes? Can you perform the C or J Strokes? What about rolls? Have you enough experience to escape from a capsized kayak? In a situation where your kayak capsizes, do you know how to escape a flipped boat? Have you spent enough time practising rescue drills so you know exactly what to do?

A capsized boat is no fun if you don't know how to escape from a flip. If think you can decide on your trip based on knowledge and understanding from movies, you've just made your first mistake. While you're in the water, if you can't read the situation wil will trip you up and could put you in danger. Thus learning and practicing basic strokes and survival tactics is essential before heading out on your kayaking trip. You want to learn and understand how to use the Eskimo roll, since this roll is the key to escaping basically every capsize that could occurs in open waters.

Once know these basic rolls and strokes, along with several advanced strokes, you'll be able to be the master of any kayaking trip you take.

To get a better understanding about kayaking and some of the trips you can take, you can review some of the cruises and adventures expert kayakers often take. This will also require answering a few questions.

Which strockes do you think an expert heading for a gothic V down Whitewater Rivers would use to maneuver his kayak? How do experts escape whitewater river gothic V?

An experienced kayaker employs a variety of strokes when coming upon a gothic V in rushing waters, staying alert and not panicking, but calmly using well practised moves to manipulate his kayak to safety. Experts never leave anything to chance, equiping themselves with a proper boat, paddles, blades, equipment as well as supplies when on a kayaking trip.

What equipment should you take on a Coastal Cruise?

A coastal cruise means you're heading off to sea. Therefore you need to carefully plan by making a checklist, which includes a stowage plan and deck plan, as well as charts, otherwise you could find youself in major trouble somewhere along the way. Therefore, if you don't have the skill level, knowledge, intelligence, and strength you best to postpone any trip until you've acquired all of these.

Even if you're planning a Stillwater trip, you could be at risk, especially, if you haven't mastered the basic and advanced strokes, including the Eskimo roll. Even then, if you put too much buoyancy in your boat, the Eskimo roll might not help you recover from a capsizing.

Have you figured it out by now? Planning your kayaking trip means you need to read, learn, and practice, practice, practice and then you'll be prepared for your first adventure in Stillwater for a short distance.
