When Your Kayak Capsizes

from: Maxx Adventure Travel

Kayaking is a risky activity, which requires careful attention while operating a kayak. You'll also need to employ tight balance while paddling a kayak through whitewaters. Sometimes kayaking can lead to capsizing, i.e. flipping of the kayak etc. When a kayak flips, the person is often upside down in the waters and stuck in the seat of the boat. Make sure you weigh floating gear while whitewater kayaking. You shuld also practice breathing tactics to help you avoid drowning if you flip your kayak.

Practice makes it easier to avoid capsizing kayaks. You'll learn the ropes as well as learn how to steer and balance the kayak properly. The best solution is to practice in low risk waters. Practicing also helps you to avoid panicking in the event your kayak capsizes.

Rules:

First, make sure you have safety gear approved by the Coast Guards. In fact, this is the laws for anyone boarding any type of boat. Lifejackets are ideal to wear when kayaking. Safety gear can comfortably store in your boat in the event you should need it. The law says you must have safety gear, yet you aren't under obligation to actuallly wear the gear.

Kayakers find British lifejackets of interest. These jackets were designed to reduce buoyancy. The reduction in buoyancy prevents you from rolling the kayak. The marketplace sells French Lifejackets for kayaking as well. You can also add to buoyancy by using air bags.

What is the cardinal rule in kayaking?

Actually, the cardinal rules apply to canoeing, yet kayakers often follow the same line of safety. The rule is that you stay with your kayak if it flips. By following this rule, the kayak will float through the waters, while supporting the person(s) in the boat -- so hold on to the kayak. If the wind is blowing your kayak, you need to allow the boat to drift shoreward. If you intend to move the kayak, make sure you astern and then shove the stern along the path you're swimming.

Should I rush if my kayak capsizes?

No, you should never rush, unless the water is forcing you to rush. Try to take your time while floating with the boat onto shore if possible.

How do I re-board a kayak if it capsizes?

This depends on the kayak you're using. Some kayaks carry one passenger, while other types carry more than one. If it's just you, likely the kayak will flip upside down and you'll be stuck in the seat, unless you're lightweight. If you find self stuck in the seat, you should try to maneuver the boat, accordingly to flip it upright. View your user manuals because it varies with each type of kayak.

Should I wear a wetsuit?

Only if the water is cold and you're at risk of freezing.

What should I do in whitewater when my kayak capsizes?

Pray...you're in danger naturally when you're kayaking in whitewaters. Whitewaters naturally gush faster than other waters, and often rocks pave the path. If you're able to remove yourself from the kayak, you want to allow the boat to take its own course of action. If you hang onto the boat, it could increase the level of danger. Practice holding your breathe for about 30 seconds, since sometimes you have to wiggle your way out of kayaks in whitewaters.
