A Quick Introduction To Mountain Biking

from: Maxx Adventure Travel

Mountain biking is a great way to explore the outdoors, stay in shape, or just have some fun and adventure. Racing down the side of a mountain is fun indeed, although it can also be dangerous. However, even though there are dangers, if you ride with caution, this great adventure can be enjoyed by the entire family.

Mountain Biking Styles

Mountain biking is best divided into three different styles -- downhill, free riding and cross country. Though each style is similar in some ways, each one requires different skills. The style you enjoy the most will determine the type of bike you get.

Mountain Biking Locations

This sport is thought of as biking on an unpaved surface. Many areas throughout North America have specific locations designed for mountain biking. Before deciding to go down a trail, always check with the local park to get routes, regulations and any rules that might apply.

There are also groups who have mountain bike rides and competitions. Check on the internet or even in a local paper and see exactly what might be available in your area. If you're in the right area, you should find groups for advanced riders as well as beginners.

Becoming an Excellent Biker

Endurance and stamina are key qualities needed if you're going to be a successful mountain biker. It takes ambition and practice to succeed and conquer the courses over and over again. As with other sports, it takes time and practice to achieve excellence. If you're just starting out, you'll have to find a way to get past the bumps and bruises that will inevitably happen from falling off the bike.

Selecting Your Mountain Bike

Which bike you select is a very personal decision, and a major determining factor on the type of riding you'll be doing. Bikes come in many various and different styles, shapes and prices, which will can make selecting one for yourself a difficult task indeed.

On convenient way to shop for a bike is to use the internet to do research and price comparisons you make a purchase and once you've got something in mind, always ask to try it out first before buying. A great mountain biker becomes "one" with his or her bike, so always check for comfort, how it fits even how it is geared.

Riding Safety

Mountain bike riding on unpaved roads can sometimes be quite dangerous. Therefore, when you're riding you should always wear a helmet, along with knee and elbow pads. When following a group or riding in the woods, a pair of goggles is highly recommended as well. Safety should be your top priority and should never be taken lightly whenever you're mountain biking.
