Diving In A Different Environment

from: Maxx Adventue Travel

People, now more than ever, are drawn to the beauty and adventure of the underwater environment, especially since humans can now go a hundred feet below the surface using scuba diving gear. For anyone sarching for the ultimate adventure, you won't do better than scuba diving the depths of the ocean.

But it's important that before you get started, to keep in mind that scuba diving does pose some hazards that you should be aware of, the most being pressure related injuries, such as decompression sickness or air embolism. Avoiding this type injury requires you to calculate how long you can safely stay underwater. You must know proper descent and ascent rates, to avoid finding yourself fatally inflicted with a pressure related illness.

The majority of aquatic creatures provide few risks to scuba divers, in fact, it's a diver who may be more of a threat to them. An example would be coral which can be killed with just one touch.

There are, of course, some marine animals out there that could injure a diver. The ones to watch out for include jellyfishes, stinging corals, fire corals and sea urchins. Thought sharks and other poisonous sea creatures can also cause injuries, this is rare. Animals generally only attack humans when they've been provoked.

Certainly there have been unprovoked shark attacks, but these occasions are still quite few. According to statistics, the odds of being attacked by a dangerous aquatic creatir is about 1 in 12 million so it's more likely you'll be attacked by a dog or a snake then any underwater predator.

When looking for for the best scuba diving locations, look for places there's lots of marine life. Of course, it's an added bonus if the water is clear and the temperature is nice and warm. Since scuba diving is mainly a visual underwater experience it's important to avoid altering the underwater habitat. Dont' touch anything, whether plants, animals or any object underwater.

Once of the most popular scuba diving destination is the Caribbean where the seas contain colorful coral reefs with bountiful marine life. Many varieties of fishes make their home among these coral reefs. You'll find that most areas of the Caribbean are designated as marine sanctuaries which means fishing and other activities that might damage marine life are prohibited.

There is also an attempt to preserve ship wreck sites. Along with valuable treasure and clues to our rich history, sunken ships give aquatic animals an ideal nesting or breeding area. These ships add both beauty to the ocean floors plus some utilitarian purposes for aquatic animals who live in deep places where resources are very scarce.

There's an estimated 75 000 sunken ships in the North America region alone that attract thousands of divers from all over the world. Some are looking for buried treasures while others want fame for having discovered an important historical links.

Other protected areas famous as dive destinations include the South Pacific, Indian Ocean and the Red Sea. Although these destinations are open for viewing and recreational diving, enough marine police are assigned to ensure that the divers abide by the conservation rules and regulations.
