In the early 1900's, a ship was wrecked by a terrible cyclone in Queensland. This unfortunate occurance took a famous racehourse and over a hundred people's lives. The 109 metre long shipwreck was officially protected as a historical site during the 1980s.
One diver explained: "The Yongala is all about the fish!" -- and indeed, just beneath the surface of this site it's teeming with aquatic life, including sea snakes, manta rays, turtles, octopuses, tiger and bull sharks, corals -- you name it, the Yongala's got it.
Unfortunately, anyone wanting to peek inside the shipwreck will discover there's some bad news. Divers are forbidden to enter the ship and at a heavy price if you breaks this rule. This rule serves to add to the mystery of the shipwreck and to the value of this dive site.
