Powder Snow, Crud and Downhill Skiing
from: Maxx Adventure TravelDownhill skiing is the perfect recreational activity for adveturous people who like going to the extreme.
In some areas of the world where there is extremely cold conditions and snow, downhill skiing is actually an essential mode of transportation. However, skiing is now so popular, even people from areas of the world with little snow are taking up the sport by booking holidays at different ski resorts or visiting artificially snowed domes.
However, before getting into downhill skiing, you definitely need to learn and understand the basic skills and safety precautions needed for this activity.
A good place to start is learning the difference between powder and crud snow.
Skiing On Powder Snow
Powder snow is snow made of powdery flakes and when a snow covered downhill slope is powdery, rather than hard pack, skiing the slope becomes much more challenging.
Downhill skiers are used to skiing on hard pack snow, which is why powdery snow causes more skiers to tumble and fall, especially during edging, turning and carving.
One way experts suggest a skier can move more freely and comfortably is by thinking and feeling as if they're skiing or floating over snow.
A downhill skier accustomed to skiing over powder snow will possesses unique and special skills learned by experience over time. A good tip for wannabe powder skiers is to ski as if you're skiing on water.
Skiing On Crud
So what the heck is crud? Well, crud is snow that's somewhere between powder and hard snow, and downhill skiing on crud is just as difficult as powdery snow.
There are lots of different terms to describe crud including snow cones, mush, sticky, grabby, slush or crust.
What's dangerous about crud is that it can change it's texture due to sun exposure, the altitude of the mountain, its moisture content and even the time of day. Therefore crud is different than powder snow in the sense that crud can be many other different types of snow.
If your track is crud, then your skiing adventure is going to be much different and more difficult. Therefore, you're likely to be downhill skiing over crud surfaces, it's in your best interest to invest in special and, unfortunately, higher cost and quality and reliable equipment.
You'll also need to learn a some new skiing tricks and techniques since your movements when downhill skiing in crud is going to be quite challenging as well as risky.
More Basic Downhill Skiing Skills
Downhill skiers need to learn how to ski on downhill slopes that are filled with bumps, steeps and trees, all of which are obstacles that are significantly dangerous and pose a threat to your safety.
Here's a few simple guidelines to help avoid danger:
* Make sure you get proper training and learn all the skills required before heading out on the slopes for some downhill skiing.
* Using proper downhill skiing equipment is critical so don't skimp by buying cheap equipment, your health and safety may depend on it.
* Make sure you're physically capable and healthy, which means a proper exercise and conditioning regiment. Your gym instructor will be able to teach you the right basic exercises you should use to build up your muscles for skiing.
* Get proper training by joining a skiing school, which are usually available at ski resorts.
* Learning how to navigate using your poles and skis is a must. Also understand natural body reflexes and movements that facilitate good skiing, especially on slopes where there are steeps, bumps and trees. Mastering these skills will prevent potential accidents.
Downhill skiing is truly an exciting and addictive adventure, and by learning how to avoid the potential dangers, you'll be able to hit the slopes over and over again.
