An Essential Part of Your Gear -- Skiing Sunglasses

from: Maxx Adventure Travel

Protecting your eyes when skiing is a critical part of any succesful ski run. Too much exposure to UV light could cause painful snow blindness, which is a temporary loss of vision. In addition, if you're over-exposured to UV rays for an extended period of time, you could get permanent eye damage. In skiing, this situation is even more potenitally dangerous because of the sunlight being reflected off the snow, so it's alway advisable to wear skiing sunglasses at all the times, even on an overcast day.

Sunglasses specifically designed for skiing provides your eyes with proper protection against reflected sunlight. If you're not wearing skiing sunglasses while on the slopes, your eyes are going to absorb twice as much Ultraviolet rays. In addition, skiing sunglasses will help to filter out up to 90 % of natural light which will also reduce eyestrain.

Specially designed sunglasses for skiing have durable frames that help to deflect the wind. It's a good idea when choosing your skiing sunglasses to get a pair with adjustable and elastic headbands. The lens should also have an anti-fog and anti-scratch coating so your vision isn't blurred when skiing.

Another option is sunglasses that have interchangeable lens which come in handy to suit different lighting conditions. You'll find that smoke-colored lens do the job for low light levels and cool colors such as blue work great in bright light. You should also check out polarized lenses because they help to minimizes glare and they're great for any reflective environment such as ski slops.

Skiing sunglasses range in price from $40 - $200 plus.

Glacier skiing sunglasses have 100% UV protection and 90% plus visible light reduction that will block out harsh sunlight and usually have removable side shields that provide additional protection from snow and wind. These sunglasses range from $20 - $100.

Quality is always important when purchasing skiing sunglasses to make sure you're getting the best protection for the dollars spent. Avoid glass lenses because plastic lenses are much more servicable for skiing. If you wear prescription glasses, you should be able to locate special skiing sunglasses suitable for your requirements. You'll also be able to find special skiing sunglasses for children.

Skiing sunglasses will last much longer when cared for properly so it's recommended you purchase a lens care kit that includes a lens cleaner, a spray of lens coating that prevents fogging, plus a soft cleaning cloth that won't scratch your plastic lenses during cleaning.
