Choosing Your Skiing Apparel

from: Maxx Adventure Travel

When shopping for skiing apparel it's nice to be fashionable, but there's a lot more to consider. Winter clothing of any kind, whether for skiing or just general wear should be chosen mainly for practical reasons.

Therefore, when shopping for skiing apparel consider the following:

1. When taking part in physical activities, do you perspire a lot?

2. Where will your skiing adventure be located? (Climate will be a factor).

3. How much do you plan to spend on ski apparel?

4. Do you plan to use your ski apparel for other purposes?

Once you have the answers to these questions clear in your mind consider three important aspects of skiing apparel -- the layers of clothing required. For skiing, the three layers are, the base layer, insulating later and the element layer. All three layers should be considered when purchasing your skiing outfit to provide the best protection from potentially harsh weather.

The Base Layer

If you perspire a lot, you should use a base layer that will wick moisture away from your body quickly. This means avoiding cotten and going with a material such as polypropylene. Cotton will absorb moisture, which isn't a good idea when skiing because this moisture will stay pressed against your body for a long time. Polypropylene, however, will wick away the moisture, which means you'll be dry, comfortable and less likely to get chilled.

The Insulating Layer

This layer is for keeping your body warm while out in cold weather and is considered the most important layer in your skiing apparel. Purchase material that keeps in heat while letting moisture out, such as fleece, which is actually a type of polypropylene.

The Element Layer

This layer isn't for insulation but for keeping you dry and windproof. A shell jacket is often used for this purpose since it provides a hoods, snow cuff, powder skirt, plus lots of pockets, -- all practical needs when skiing or just enjoying the outdoors.
