All About Skis, Ski Poles and Boots
from: Maxx Adventure TravelSkiing requires physical conditioning and learning the right skills that will enable you to successfully conquer any slope you choose. However, along with strength, stamina and expertise, you're also going to need the right skiing gear.
Types of Skis
Choose the right skis for the type of skiing you'll be doing.
Alpine Skis: Only skiers who have expertise about skiing or are professionals should use Alpine skis because they're extremely precise and speedy. Alpine skis are especially suited to slopes or course with a lot of turns, but you need to be precise as they allow for few mistakes.
Freeride Skis: Similar to Alpine skis, Freeride skis are mainly for expert skiers and more suitable for tough slopes or courses requiring the skier and his skis to be able to withstand many physical challenges. You can also use Freeride skis for powder skiing.
Telemark Skis: These are an excellent choice for skiers who like to go downhill fast and also for tour skiing. Bindings for Telemark Skis are attached only at the toes.
Cross Country Skis: This type are designed for XC or cross country skiing which means they're extremely slim and light, allowing greater freedom of movement. Similar to telemark skis, they're bindings are attached only at the toes. Cross Country Skis require regular waxing to ensure the skier will have better and smoother movement.
Big Mountain Skis: You could call these the Harley-Davidsons of skiing since the toughest and most skilled skiers are the only ones who can use these skis effectively. These skis are sturdily build and able to withstand any test nature throws at them.
Choose the Right Poles
The purpose of ski poles is to allow you to maintain your balance and control your speed. Your poles aren't going to necessarily affect how you ski, but will be extremely helpful if you're still learning how to ski. Therefore, don't worry about how cool or ugly your poles look until after you've mastered all the basic skills … until then, just get a set that's going to help you keep safe.
Choose the Right Boots
Next to your actual skis, skiing boots are the most important part of your gear. Your skis allow you to move better down the slope or course as well as more quickly. Therefore, having the right skiing boots to go with your skis provides comfort and ease of movement.
Skiing boots should fit snugly -- not too tight or too loose. They must also be sturdy and durable and tough enough to maintain your ankle and feet position. Your toes also need enough space to move properly since you use your toes when turning.
You may be tempted to rent skiing boots but this is one part of your gear that you should purchase because you need them to fit properly and there's always a chance you won't be able to find a perfect fit when renting. Trying to tolerate poor-fitting skiing boots can lead to complications including blisters, foot sprains as well as other foot-related problems.
Waxing Your Skis
Cross country skis aren't the only skis that need waxing. Regular waxing should be done for all skis to maintain their water-resistance. Failing to do so is almost guaranteed to result in accidents that could have been avoided.
Liquid wax applied to the base of your skis is a short-term solution, therefore, if you're thinking long-term, it's best to use hot wax.
Finally, the importance of proper storage for your skis and other skiing gear during off-season can't be emphasized enough. Always store your equipment where it's dry and make sure the're properly waxed to avoid rust.
If you're going to own your own skiing equipment, even though it's going cost you some money, you'll probably be happier in the long run because you can take your time and choose the exact gear that will work best for your style of skiing. However, investing in equipment means you should also take the time to properly care for your gear to help extend the life and to ensure your safety when you're out enjoying your latest skiing adventure.
