Should I Buy or Rent My Skiing Equipment?

from: Maxx Adventure Travel

For adventurers who've decided to test their skills by taking up downhill skiing, there's always going to be a period of learning as much as you can about your new sport. If you're into another advernture sport, you know how this works, you have to learn all about new types of gear as well as the new skills you're going to have to develop.

The place to start your learning process is at ski lodges who have instructors to give you lessons, which means you're going to need some skiing equipment.

Obviously, if you're visiting a ski lodge in season, you're already dressed appropriately for winter weather, so all you need is ski poles and skis.

As a beginner, it probably isn't practical to buy new equipment right away or if you're just an occassional skier, since you'll need to spend $500 or more.

Therefore, a good alternative is to rent some equipment, along with a pair of specially designed ski boots plus a helmet.

Ski resorts usually rent everything you need for $20 - $50 for the entire package and you'll be able to negotiate rates for using the equipment for half a day or longer.

Once you have your equipment ready, it's time to learn some of the basic techniques of skiing.

There seems to be a trend lately of skiers who ski regularly deciding not to bring their own equipment mainly for practical reasons since it can be difficult bringing everything to the lodge in a smaller car. This results in more people lining up to rent equipment which means getting in line with the crowd and patiently waiting your turn.

One way to avoid waiting in line is to reserve your skiing equipment when you make your reservations at the resort. This eliminates waiting and you can just pick up your equipment when you arrive.

So, the practical answer as to whether you should buy or rent your skiing equipment will depend on your personal situation. If you're a beginner, why not rent until you're sure you're going to take up the sport on a regular basis. Renting will also give you a good idea of the type of gear you're most comfortable using. Once you've established a love for skiing, and plan to participate on a regular basis, then it's time to invest in the best quality equipment you can afford.
