Geilo, Norway Skiing Adventures

from: Maxx Adventure Travel

The mighty Geilo in Norway is 800 metres high and at 3,887 feet, it has one of the highest ski lifts in the world. Geilo is located 3 1/2 hours from Norway's capital city, with good road and rail links to the village. With its incredible scenery, Geilo can lay claim to being the heart of Norway's “Winter Wonderland”. It maintains its reputation as the perfect family resort, with visitors finding their way from Europe and beyond since the early 1900s. Geilo has remained unspoilt, providing true Norwegian character.

However, Geilo also includes much more than just skiing facilities since it's the home to the 4 star Highland Hotel, plus numerous lodging houses, and the world famous Holms Ski Bar. Although Geilo is primarily a ski resort you'll also be able to indulge in sleigh rides, wildlife adventure tours, tobogganing, ski orienteering, snow shoe walking, dog-sledging, snowboarding, freestyle snowboarding, kite-skiing, night-skiing, and much more.

Geilo's maintains its reputation as one the worlds best skiing resorts due to its ability to cater to family ski vacationers. More than 10,000 families visit these slopes each year and Geilo offers excellent tuition packages called the “Family Starter Pack” which provides tuition for an entire family for the equivalent of about $200 a day. Thus family can learn skiing together, even families with no skiing experience can be up and running after the first day skiing on their own.

Geilo has also gained a reputation among Snowboarders, winning its bid to host the Norwegian Snowboarding Championship over Lillehammer, Voss and Hemsedal. Providing four sides of the mountain, each dedicated to snowboarding and skiing, Geilo is Norway's first skiing location to offer 5 runs dedicated to snowboarding. With a total of 110 runs, Geilo has 14% expert that allows experienced skiers to indulge themselves on the slopes, while also providing facilities for intermediates and beginners which make up a larger number of yearly visitors.

Geilo's give you exceptional value with weekly family packages starting at $1000 that include accommodations, bed and breakfast. Geilo goes out of its way to cater to families, with creches, family diners, and especially their Christmas bonanza which includes a visit from Santa and his reindeers on Christmas day. Geilo is always fully booked for Christmas, since so many partents bring their children along to share the experience of Christmas at this amazing winter wonderland.

However, Geilo offers much more than family packages. The area has also hosted some serious world sporting events, as it's the training ground for the national snowboarding and skiing teams. Geilo is open from August/September until late March.

If you're ready to investigate the possiblities of a skiing adventure at Geilo, check out their website where you'll see that consistent snowfall, plus a good variation in the difficulty of runs makes Geilo a facility that genuinely caters to everyone, whether from beginner or professional. Individual pricing plans start from $350 a week.
