Skiing Adventures at Lake Tahoe

from: Maxx Adventure Travel

If you've never been to Lake Tahoe, you'll find this large, freshwater lake nestled down in the Sierra Nevada mountain range, which is located near the border between California and Nevada. The lake is actually the second deepest lake in all of the United States and the eleventh deepest lake to be found anywhere in the world.

What makes Lake Tahoe an exceptional skiing adventure is the areas abundant snowfall between November and April, giving a full six months each year of skiing bliss. There are numerous ski resorts in the Lake Tahoe area, including Alpine Meadows, Kirkwood Mountain Resort, Mt. Rose-Ski Tahoe and Heavenly Mountain Resort which is the largest skiing area at Lake Tahoe. Olympic trivia buffs will remember that Squaw Valley, USA was the host of the 1960 Winter Olympics.

Winter is an extremely busy time at Lake Tahoe as thousands of happy skiers flock to the area for its excellent skiing. During the winter of 2005 to 2006, Lake Tahoe's ski resorts received up to 100 feet of snow.

Accommodations at Lake Tahoe are available to suit every preference and budget. Ski resorts provide a wide variety of lodging choices and if you're really into pampering yourself, you can stay at one of the many luxury hotels or condos. Those who like to rough it out by remaining close to nature will be able to choose the forest cabins and chalets. Of course, a skiing vacation is more than about skiing and so these resorts provide numerous restaurants and casinos in and around the area.

You'll also be able to participate in many different types of skiing. Alpine skiers can indulge in their passion at ski resorts in the area including Donner Ski Ranch, Homewood, Heavenly Mountain Resort and Tahoe Donner resorts.

Those with a preference for Nordic skiing such as cross-country skiing and ski jumping can check into Clair Tappaan, Hope Valley, Eagle Mountain, Spooner Lake, Royal Gorge, Sugar Pine, and Tahoe Donner resorts.

Lake Tahoe is especially excellent for cross-country skiing because of the many groomed and mapped trails.Ski equipment rentals are available and some resorts also provide sleds if you want to pull your small children along with you when you're skiing.

Throughout the ski season, conditions at Lake Tahoe are regularly and thoroughly monitored and you'll be able to check them out online, where they're updated regularly. You can also book your vacation online.

When it's time to decide on a skiing adventure vacation, be sure to explore all the offerings available in the Lake Tahoe region.
