Geilo is located 3 1/2 hours from Norway's capital city, with good road and rail links to the village. More than 10,000 families visit these slopes each year and Geilo offers excellent tuition packages called the “Family Starter Pack” which provides tuition for an entire family for the equivalent of about $200 a day. Thus family can learn skiing together, even families with no skiing experience can be up and running after the first day skiing on their own.
Geilo has also gained a reputation among Snowboarders, winning its bid to host the Norwegian Snowboarding Championship over Lillehammer, Voss and Hemsedal. Providing four sides of the mountain, each dedicated to snowboarding and skiing, Geilo is Norway's first skiing location to offer 5 runs dedicated to snowboarding. With a total of 110 runs, Geilo has 14% expert that allows experienced skiers to indulge themselves on the slopes, while also providing facilities for intermediates and beginners which make up a larger number of yearly visitors.

Geilo goes out of its way to cater to families, with creches, family diners, and especially their Christmas bonanza which includes a visit from Santa and his reindeers on Christmas day. However, Geilo offers much more than family packages. The area has also hosted some serious world sporting events, as it's the training ground for the national snowboarding and skiing teams. Geilo is open from August/September until late March.
