Backpacking Survival Essentials

from: Maxx Adventure Travel

Backpacking is a great adventure, however, the last thing you want is turn get yourself into an unmanageable situation that you're not prepared to deal with properly.

Some common sense and making sure you're carrying the right gear and other backpacking "must have" items will make a major difference as to whether you can deal with and survive extreme conditions.

Here's a quick list of the what you need to have the perfect backpacking adventure:

1: Lightweight Sleeping Mat

Perhaps you it isn't your idea of a great adventure by bringin along anything that resembles some cozy item that reminds you of home. However, after you've spend some time in one of those local inns or hotels and dealt with the germs and bed bugs, you'll start to appreciate why it's smart to bring along your own sleeping mat.

2: Carry Portable Condiments

You will save money by keeping your extra packets of mustard, ketchups, chilli sauces etc. with you. When you don't have enough resources or if you forgot to bring some of the ingredients that make your food more edible, these small packets of condiments will definitely come in handy. You definitely don't want to carry glass bottles that could break and cutt your skin or have gooey ketchup making a mess of your other backpack stuff.

3: First Aid Kit

Never think you're being brave by going to places you're not familiar with without taking a first aid kit. Unless you have a death wish, it's critically important that you bring gauze, iodine solution, milk of magnesia, antibiotics, and insect repellent. It's always better to be safe than sorry.

4: Dress for Success

When backpacking it never hurts to dress for success. Comfortable clothes that don't restrict your movements are going to be a life saver on those long hikes. For trekking, sturdy but comfortable boots are definitely going to be your best friend. A bandana is a smart idea as well since it will prevent sweat from blurring your vision and can also be a part of your first aid kit.

5: Backpack gizmos

Unless you're really the king of the world, you're going to need a good compass and a reliable map. If you haven't learned how to use these, postpone your backpacking adventure until you do.

Here's a few more backpacking "must-haves" ... a flashlight, a firestarter and a Swiss knife. Of course, common sense should give you a clude as to what else you should take along, so think through every situations that could arise and act accordingly.
